Electric Motor
An electric motor is an electrical machine that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. Most electric motors operate through the interaction between the motor’s magnetic field and electric current in a wire winding to generate force in the form of torque applied on the motor’s shaft.
Electric motors were developed in the late 1800s. By 1887, the electric motor was installed on the first electric trolley system in Richmond, Virginia. By 1892, the electric elevator and control system was invented. Thomas Edison promoted DC power and built electric power transmission systems to power DC motors.
Modernizing the Industrial Steam Age
That sparked an “industrial revolution” by improving industrial applications. At the time, industrial processes were limited by power transmissions using belts, line shafts, compressed air or hydraulic pressure. With the electric motor, every machine could be powered by its own electric motor and provide easy control at the point of use.
This improved power transmission efficiency and increased safety and ease of setting up production.

Industrial electric motors eliminated animal and hydraulic power in processing grain and pumping water. The electric motor replaced the steam engines for powering locomotives, steamships, and industrial plants.
Today, the Department of Energy estimates that electric motors consume half of the nation’s electric power grid.
Advantages of AC and DC Motors
The DC motor is used for heavy-duty applications requiring high starting torque and compact design for high speed. AC motors are commonly found where precise controllers are required to boost efficiency and power output.
This is where the controller technology has advanced most appreciably in the past 20 years.
